Bamboo Grass Dew

Updated: Jul 13, 2023

The rainy season has started, and the rain continues. The hydrangeas have changed color, and the tearoom is colored in early summer.

The hanging scroll is "水上清々翠" written by Hashimoto Shosho. It is a Zen word that describes the scenery where green aquatic plants sway on the waterside, and you can feel the cool breeze.

The utensil srand is called “Ryusei-dana,” which features a round window of the ladle. It was designed by the Urasenke 14th generation Tantansai from the window of the Kyoto Kon-nichi-an tearoom. The water container is made of glass cut foil, and the blue water and gold leaf shine for a refreshing impression.

At the tea ceremony, the “natsume” (tea container) and “chashaku” (tea scoop) are put out so that the customer can take a look at the utensils. In the lesson today the “chashaku” is placed on the “fukusa” and handled with care.

Natsume: "Bamboo grass" by Reiho Sasaki (Fukui prefecture), a copy handed down by Rikyu. Traditional lacquer work with beautiful dew on bamboo leaves.

Chashaku: Made by Kaido Fujii (the 515th head of Daitokuji Temple in Kyoto). Inscription "Koke-goromo". (Photo above) It means moss that collects raindrops and looks like a robe. Inscription for June,

Today we have 2 types of dried sweets to match the thin tea.

Sanuki Wasanbon sugar named "Kusudama 🎊" splits in two when opened, sweet and cute. (Bottom right of photo) The other is "Matsugaoka" made by Kamakura Toshimaya.

Yuzu bean paste and Oshima bean paste in thin monaka seeds.

It is a famous confectionery that feels the atmosphere of a long time ago, made with the memory of the time when Wakamiya Oji in Hachimangu was lined with pine trees. (Bottom left of photo)

Rain is difficult to move and sometimes causes disasters, but it is also a rain of blessings.

Enjoy a moment of tea during the rainy season. Feel the serenity in the sound of the rain and the dew on the bamboo leaves.
