Early Autumn

Writer's picture: 高橋宗真 高橋宗真

This summer was extremely hot, but we are finally seeing signs of autumn.

It is the season to see hanging scrolls with "月白風清" (The moon is white and the wind is clear) and Japanese pampas grass swaying in it.

The flowers are small chrysanthemums in muted colors.

To avoid the heat in September, we take the tea box lesson using an iron kettle with handle instead of a kettle for "furo". The tea box procedure was invented by Urasenke the11th Gengensai at the end of the Edo period, and all the utensils fit into one box.

It also comes with a tube to hold the tea whisk, and a cloth porch (“shifuku” in Japanese) to wrap the tea bowl and tea scoop, making it portable so that it can be enjoyed while traveling or outdoors. (Middle photo)

There are three types of tea box procedure called "Snow, Moon, Flower," and today we practice "Snow."

The utensils are taken out of the box one by one, and the tea is made, and finally all the utensils are returned to the box.

The tea caddy and tea whisk are placed on the lid of the box. The procedure of using the entire box is very well thought out and beautiful.

I purchased this tea box over 30 years ago on the recommendation of my first tea teacher. The lacquerware features "Four seasonal flowers” and the pattern on the cloth pouch is "Manyo floral". Although many years have passed, its chic shine has not changed, and I treasure it.

The sweets are Wasanbon "Hana Usagi 🐰" in Kanazawa and Western-style confectionery gaufrettes. The dried confectionery tray with a cloisonne openwork conveys the flavors with a light touch.
