Enjoy opening the “ro”

Updated: Jan 25, 2022

This year the season for opening the “ro” (sunken hearth) has just come again.

In midsummer it was very hot, and also the coronavirus was worried. The mild autumn was felt far away, but the seasons came around.

The shelf is called "Ryusei Dana", which is a favorite of Urasenke 14th Tantan-Sai. The round window on the left is impressive, and if you look closely, the handle of ladle is assembled with wisteria vines. It was designed from the base window “Ladle's Handle Window" of he tea room "Ryusei-ken" at Urasenke Konnichi-an in Kyoto. It's a modern design, isn’t it?

The "temae" (tea procedure) of the picture is the last Sunday class in November.

At the end of thin tea procedure, the tools are displayed on the shelf, and it looks an assortment of autumn leaves. (Upper left of the photo)

Natsume (thin tea container): Izumo lacquer "Unn-kin" (means cherry blossoms and autumn leaves) made by Shikko-sai in Matsue.

Tea bowl: Kyoto Heian kiln "Ivy painting" made by Shiun.

Mizusashi(fresh water container) : "Grape shelves" by Nishimura Tokusen in Kyoto.

The hanging scroll is "Kan(関) south-north-east-west roads lead a way out of the difficulty" for opening of the “ro”.

The sweets are Urasenke's favorite "Funoyaki" (Shiki-tei). The name has been passed down since the Rikyu era, and although it looks simply, it is fragrant and delicious with sugar and miso.

The autumn leaves in the courtyard of my house are also brightly colored, and it is at their best now. It seems that they are celebrating the “ro” opening quietly. (Bottom of photo)
