Plum Scent

Updated: Mar 19

In Tokyo, it snows in early February, and the days with strong northerly winds continue. It's still cold in winter, but the early plum blooms are starting to bloom.

The tea utensils in February are the combination that quietly waits for spring after the gorgeous New Year’s first tea.

Hanging scroll: "山中無暦日" (no calendar days in the mountains). A Zen word that says there is no calendar in the mountains but nature, and that you can escape from everyday life and have some calm time. Written by Taigen Kobayashi, Daitokuji Obai-in, Kyoto.

"Mizusashi": Miraku Kamei, the 14th generation of Takatori. The dull colored glaze gives it an elegant look.

"Natsume": "Hanamaru Makie" by Sokei Miyata of Sabae, Fukui Prefecture. Bamboo and plum blossoms are drawn in a round circle.

Tea bowl: "Daffodil" Kiyomizu ware, made by Kaiho.

The tea procedure is different from usual, and this is called "Gyakugatte''(opposite). When making tea, the kettle is on the left, and the location of the utensils also changes. The guests sit on the left-hand side of the place where the host sits. This type of procedure follows the tearoom format.

The sweets are Wasanbon chocolate for Valentine's Day. Round chocolate and heart-shaped dried sweets are cute♡

The plum tree in the picture is at nearby park. I can feel the spring sunshine.
