Tea in the middle of winter

February is the coldest season of the year, and the tea values warmth.

In the middle of winter, we use a cylindrical bowl called " tsutsuchawan" that is longer than the usual tea bowl. To prevent the tea from getting cold, we warm it with hot water before carrying it to the tea room. (Upper left of photo)

Tea bowl: Red Raku type “tsutsuchawan”. The shape of bowl is narrow and it is difficult to pour hot water, but the warmth of the hot water makes us feel happy.

Natsume (tea container): "Hanamaru Makie" (design like as flower circle) by Sokei Miyata in Sabae city, Fukui prefecture. Bamboo and plums are drawn in a round circle, calling for spring.

Mizusashi (water container): Takatori 14th Kamei Miraku. It is much thinner than it looks with a wabi-sabi glaze.

The hanging scroll is "山中無暦日" (no calendar day in the mountains). There is no calendar in the mountains, and there are various worries in everyday life, but the mind means to have a calm time without losing oneself like in the mountains.

In the tea procedure (center of the photo at the bottom), did you notice that "Oh, the position of the kettle is reversed?"

This is the "opposite" tea room format and the kettle is on the opposite left side. The positions of the natsume, chasen(tea whisk) and kensui (waste-water receptacle) are changed, and the tea procedure is also reversed. It's confusing at first, but an interesting idea.

This is based on the idea of using a large "ro" (large sunken hearth) in the middle of winter so that you can feel the fire nearby. It is the original idea of Urasenke 11th Gengensai.

The sweets cerebrate early Hina-matsuri (the Dolls’ festival on March).

Spring is coming soon.
