This is the first tea gathering of the new year. The hanging scroll “好日 Kōjitsu" (Good Day) and the flower vase by Eiraku Sokuzen of Kyoto add an elegant touch.
the tea setting features a "kaigu" set colored with blue see waves (青海波 seigaiha) pattern. With no pillars at the corners, the long board beautifully sets off the pine, bamboo, and plum motifs against its black surface.
This is the thick tea procedure. The tea caddy is taken from its pouch and purified. The tea bowl is red Raku ware. The host is calm and composed, having earned an advanced qualification last year.
In the living room, tea is served in the “ryurei” style at a table. (Photo below)
The person performing the ceremony is in their 80s and always wears kimono beautifully. I am very glad she continues practicing tea in good health.
For thin tea, the tea container is the “Akebono natsume,” decorated with auspicious crane, turtle, and pine motifs and favored by Gengensai, the 11th head of Urasenke.
For thin tea, the tea bowl is called “Three Citrus Fruits,” symbolizing health, protection from evil, and good fortune. The green tea looks especially beautiful in it. The sweets are “Hanabira Mochi” from Chanoha at Tamaplaza and New Year’s dry sweets.
The “好日” scroll and the flower-circle kaigu convey the spirit of the New Year.
Wishing everyone a happy year ahead.
