The first "Furo"

Updated: Jul 9, 2021

In May, the tea has a look of summer.

The “Ro” ( sunken hearth) that used to be near the customer now is closed and the “Furo” (brazier) is set to the left of the place where the host is seated. Contrary to the time of “Ro” season, the fire is away from guests to avoid the heat. The “Furo” season is from May to October, and it is called “the first Furo" as May being the first month.

The combination of early summer is a “natsume" (tea container) of "Ao kaede" (green maple tree) and a tea bowl of iris. the “natsume” is a cylinder shape with a flat lid. This shape is said to be "Kinrinji", and it is believed that Emperor Godaigo used it as a thick tea container at Kinpusen-ji Temple in Yoshino, and it was a small sutra receptacle. The “natsume” is a work of a female artist in Wajima lacquer ware, and the kaede pattern with mother-of-pearl work tells the summer.

The colored paper of the hanging scroll means that “Bamboo creates a clear breeze for you”. It is hard to read, but the character "bamboo" grows long, and you can image a bamboo grove. This word also means a departure for those who have left for new their respective paths.

The shelves are "Yoshino stand" with round windows used in April, and the left side changes from shoji to reeds. (Bottom photo) At the end of making tea, the ladle is hung on the hook on the left side of the shelf.

The sweets are chilled "Fu Manju". The scent of green laver and bamboo grass is refreshing. Even at the tea ceremony, we wear a mask to prevent the infection.

The guests are often inconvenienced, but we hope the tea will soothe our hearts and convey compassion to each other.

The tea makes our thirst quench for a while.
